Licensing information and forms

Before you may purchase a reptile in the State of Western Australia you must obtain a Pet Herpetofauna Keepers license, for the specified reptile you wish to keep.  Check the Keepers list for the license that is required.

Please read and understand the rules and regulations of your Pet Herpetofauna Keepers license, there is no excuse for not complying and the DEC will prosecute if you do break any of them.  For your convenience I have added the regulations after the forms for you to read.

Please find below the links for the Current License application form, Quarterly Keepers Record Sheet and the Current Keepers list!

1. Pet Herpetofauna Keepers License Application

Print off the license application form, fill it in and forward it to the address at the top by mail or fax, you may pay over the phone by credit card or by postal order or over the counter at the DEC.

2. Quarterly Record Keeping Sheet

This sheet must be submitted to the DEC every quarter (every three months), once you have obtained a Keepers license.  A separate sheet is required for each species that is kept.

3. Current Keepers List

This is the most important list of all, you are not allowed to keep any other reptile that is not on this list, no ifs, buts or maybes.
You must be over the age of 18 to keep any of the reptiles in Category 3 to 5.  If parents believe that their child is responsible enough to have any of the species in Cat 3 they may obtain the license on their behalf.

In short the regulations mean that :

1. You may not import any Pythons from the Eastern States, this is because of the disease IBD.  Western Australia has the strictist quarantine laws in Australia and this prohibition is to keep our unique pythons safe.

2. You may not take a reptile from the wild - large fines if you do.

3.  You may only purchase or sell your reptile through a licensed dealer.  (Dont buy it off a friend if they are not a licensed dealer, you and your friend could  both end up losing your license and the reptiles involved)

4. You must at all times provide adequate care for your reptile, research, research, research.

5. You must submit your quarterly keepers record sheet, accurately and on time, if not this could jeapordise the future of upgrading your license.

6.  You may not release your reptile in the wild.

7. You are not permitted to feed it live vertebrates (ie mice, rats, lizards)

8. You may sell one clutch of one species in a calender year.  Only to a licensed dealer.
